Call to Courage: Brave Work Though Conversations and Showing Up With Our Whole Hearts
While calls to courage can be loud and impossible to ignore, they can also appear as faint whispers. In this workshop, we will explore a courage-building program to develop brave leaders and teams.
Based on the work and research of Dr. Brené Brown, daring leadership is a collection of skills that are 100% teachable. Its learning and practice requires brave work, tough conversations and showing up with our whole hearts. In this workshop, we will do all three.
Amy Leneker is a leadership consultant and a certified Dare to Lead™ Facilitator. Amy’s career spans more than 20 years and has held leadership positions in state government and education. She is known for her trusted advice, track record of delivering results and an optimistic attitude.
Amy has trained thousands of executives, leaders and practitioners. Because of her ability to engage and energize others, Amy has been asked to appear before hundreds of audiences. As a first-generation college student, she believes in the power of education and holds a master’s degree in public administration.
Amy and her husband have two mostly well-behaved children, two rarely-behaved Labradoodles and one gecko that joined the family after Amy was outvoted. They make their home in the Pacific Northwest.
Behavioral based interviews. The mere phrase can strike fear into the hearts of even the most experienced job candidates. Yet, they’re one of the most common types of questions for government jobs.
The key to acing these type of interviews, according to leadership consultant and coach Amy Leneker is to practice responding to these type of questions long before you’re even called into the interview. Leneker, a former state employee and the CEO of Compass Consulting, held multiple workshops on using the STAR method for behavioral based interviews at the ICSEW’s first ever career fair May 21 at the Department of Labor and Industries. The STAR Method
STAR stands for Situation, Task, Action, Results.
Leneker says the response to each question should be given using each component of STAR.
Situation: Describe the situation you encountered
Task: Describe the task you had to do.
Action: Tell the interviewer the action you took to accomplish the task.
Results: Wrap up the question describing the outcome of the situation.
Participants in each session were divided into groups of three and attendees role played the interviewer, job candidate, and observer. Each person practiced the STAR method and received feedback from their peers.
Leneker also suggested when answering questions to say the words Situation, Task, Action and Results in your responses because it often helps you organize your responses and keep them succinct. And if the company/interviewer values the STAR method in its work culture, they’ll be impressed you’re familiar with it, too, Leneker said.

Amy Leneker gave an interactive training on identifying and maximizing one’s Clifton Strengths.
Clifton Strengths are named after Dr. Don Clifton, former chairman of The Gallup Organization. Gallup conducted several years of research on personality types. The research suggested people who best understand their strengths and behaviors will be best-equipped to deploy those strengths in their personal and professional lives.
Leneker showed meeting attendees how to find their top five strengths. She taught attendees how to best use those strengths, and recognize when those strengths become weaknesses. She did a couple of individual coaching sessions. Workshop attendees also got to team up with partners for an exercise that allowed attendees to brainstorm ways to combine different strengths.

Dr. Arne Gundersen, from Gundersen Dental Care in Thurston County gave a health and wellness talk. His presentation, “The Link between Oral Health and Wellness,” illustrated the correlation between periodontal disease and its impact on our overall health.
He said periodontal disease (the body’s inflammatory response to infections caused by buildup of bacteria and debris around the teeth and gums) can put you at risk for more serious diseases like diabetes and heart attacks.
He offered a series of preventative tips like using electric toothbrushes and/or a water pic.

Leneker will present Clifton Strengths: How to Identify your Strengths and Meet Your Goals. This workshop will help you identify your top strengths and develop strategies for meeting your goals using those strengths.
Participants will leave the workshop with a personalized action plan to help them apply their strengths at work and beyond.

Note: If possible, take the Clifton Strengths Assessment prior to the meeting. There is a $49 version that ranks all 34 strengths and a $19 version that ranks your top 5.It is not required, but will make the training more robust if you have taken it.
All meetings are open to the public, regardless of gender or employment status.
Parking: The Department of Labor and Industries has a limited amount of visitor parking. There is also a limited amount of street parking along 73rd Avenue. There is an overflow parking lot at the Mountain Church of the Nazarine, 940 Israel Road SW, Tumwater. Public transportation and carpooling are highly encouraged.
