Bill Alert HB 1090
If passed, this bill would require insurance providers of patients in Washington State to cover a 12-month supply of birth control at any time, whether it is an initial prescription or a refill. While Washington was one of the first states to mandate coverage of 12-month supplies of birth control, at present, this does not include first-fills, but rather only covers refills. Thus, this legislation would reduce the frequency with which patients are required to refill their contraception prescriptions, thereby increasing access, decreasing the rate of unwanted pregnancies, keeping people that need birth control because of underlying conditions healthy, and strengthening safety planning for domestic violence victims.
There are no fiscal impacts. The bill is currently in the House Rules Committee, having passed the Health Care & Wellness Committee.
