Frances Axtell and Nena Croake
In 1912 and 1913, Washingtonians elected Frances C. Axtell and Nena J. Croake to the Washington State Legislature. These two women led the way and since 1913, nearly 240 women served citizens in the Washington Legislature. From 1993 to 2004, Washington led the nation with 40% of legislative seats held by women. Today women hold 32.7% of the state’s legislative seats. Nationwide that number is 24.2% and within Congress, it is 19%. Women make up 50.7% of the nation’s population, how do we encourage more to run for political office?
