Equal Pay Day

ICSEW Equal Pay Day
Members of the Interagency Committee of State Employed Women joined other community groups at the Olympia City Council meeting April 12 to recognize Equal Pay Day. The City Council issued a proclamation highlighting that more than 50 years after the passage of the Equal Pay Act, women, especially minority women, continue to earn less than their male counterparts.

April 12 is acknowledged as Equal Pay Day because it symbolizes the time in 2016 when the wages paid to American women catch up to the wages paid to men from the previous year. President Obama issued a similar proclamation that stated nationally, women are increasingly becoming the breadwinners of American households and when they are not earning equal pay, families face difficulty meeting their basic financial needs.

YWCA of Olympia, Zonta Club Of Olympia, Soroptimist of Olympia, ,Women’s Leadership Council of United Way of Thurston County, and the YWCA Economic Empowerment Program were also represented as Mayor Cheryl Selby signed the proclamation.

ICSEW is committed to educating state employees about issues that impact the workforce, both in state government and our communities. For more information visit the American Association of University Women’s webpage for in depth research on the national wage gap.
